Streets Alive Community Cycle Ride Returns - Sunday 12 July!

Last year's Streets Alive Community Cycle Ride was such a success—almost 50 enthusiastic cyclists pedalling from Poundbury into Dorchester and back, everyone arriving home safely, with plenty of fun along the way—that it's back for 2026, and organiser Giles Watts is hoping for an even bigger turnout.

On Sunday 12th July, starting at 1pm from the Great Field, the ride will follow a similar route to last year, riding from Poundbury to Dorchester and back again—a round trip of around 3 miles. There will also be a kids' cycle ride around the Great Field for younger riders not quite ready for the full route, so it's a lovely outing for the whole family.

The ride is open to cyclists of any age, though parents should accompany children under 12. Whether you cycled last year or are completely new to it, everyone is welcome. Bring your bike, bring your helmet, and bring your friends and neighbours—the more the merrier! And for those who like to make an occasion of it: there will be prizes for the best blinged bike, so feel free to get creative with the decorations.

Can you help as a cycle marshal?

Giles is also looking for a few volunteer cycle marshals to ride on the outside of the group and help keep the children safe along the route. No experience necessary—last year's marshals were simply responsible adults willing to give a bit of time on the day, and it worked brilliantly. If you're a confident cyclist and could spare a couple of hours, this is a lovely way to support a great community event.

Last year's ride was organised in partnership with the Dorchester Transport Action Group, Dorchester Town Council, and several other local groups and businesses—a genuinely community-wide effort. Let's make this year's even bigger. See you on the Great Field on 12 July!
