About the event

David Roberts is exhibiting at The Duchess between March 2nd – 15th and he is currently the Artist in Residence to His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Dorset Mr Michael Dooley LVO Mms FRCOG.

As the artist in residence David’s task is to attend events such as functions, presentations, royal visits and commemorations, and to record the day using quick sketches.

The purpose is to create a memory of the event that is different to a photograph and records the atmosphere and feel of the day. They are a representation conveying a sense of the occasion drawn on the move.

The sketches are held by the Lord Lieutenant with a view to exhibiting them towards the end of his tenure in the post.

The role is unpaid and David finds his own costs in paper, paint and travel but he sees it as a chance to use his skill in giving something back to the community. He says he also gets a lot of tea and cake!

His involvement started early in 2025, but he has been asked to continue through 2026.

There is a sample of these sketches on the mezzanine together with a very varied collection of David’s beautiful techniques in watercolour painting. There are scenes from his extensive travels to such places as the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, Italy and the equally idyllic scenery of Dorset. All sales will support the charity supporting The Lexi May Trust. David Will be present on Saturday March 7th   11 – 2pm with a further selection of cards and prints plus sketching live.
