Ethel Smyth's fine cello sonata of 1887 is a product of her years of study in Germany and follows in the tradition of her idol, Brahms. Frank Bridge wrote his sonata over four long years, 1913 – 1917. Inevitably, the war – which he detested – influenced his music, gradually moving him away from the Romanticism of his earlier music.
