A Small Pause in the Day

There's something quietly satisfying about fitting the last piece into place. In a world that often feels busy and hurried, small moments of focus can be unexpectedly calming — a chance to slow down, notice details, and enjoy doing something with your hands. That idea sits at the heart of the newest addition to Poundbury Good Things: mini wooden jigsaw puzzles.

This week, we're delighted to share a first look at these carefully crafted new Good Things. Created by Poundbury resident, artist, and volunteer Mary O'Flaherty, the Landmarks of Poundbury illustrations showcased recently are full of colour, character, and gentle humour. Translating them into small wooden jigsaws felt like a natural next step: perfectly sized for a quiet pause in the day.

Each puzzle is designed to be completed in a short sitting. Not a challenge to conquer, but an invitation to stop for a moment — perhaps with a cup of tea — and enjoy the simple pleasure of pieces coming together. They're small enough to keep on a shelf or desk, ready whenever you need a breather, and charming enough to give as a gift or collect for yourself.

The jigsaws are made for Poundbury Good Things by traditional Dorset puzzle makers Grovely Jigsaws, using wood from sustainably managed forests. The wooden puzzle pieces have a lovely tactile feel which is very much part of their charm. A final delicious detail: the new jigsaws are bespoke to Poundbury Good Things, and include a special puzzle piece shaped like Spirit, the Love Poundbury hare.

Mini-jigsaws are available initially in our new design The Plotters' Pest, with new designs joining them soon, each celebrating a familiar local landmark drawn with Mary's distinctive eye for everyday beauty. You can find wooden jigsaws on shelves now at Brace of Butchers, Queen Mother Square, as well as at our next Poundbury Good Things market stall at the end of the month.

As with everything we do, every purchase supports local initiatives, including the award-winning youth and community programmes at the Pavilion in the Park.

Why puzzles?

Mini jigsaw puzzles are quietly having a moment — and it's easy to see why. According to Happiful, the wellbeing magazine, jigsaws have evolved from a niche hobby into a popular, mainstream tool for mental wellness, mindfulness, and digital detoxification.

Their small size makes them easy to fit into everyday life: a coffee break, a calm evening, or a pause between tasks. Unlike larger puzzles that demand time and table space, mini jigsaws invite a gentler focus; something you can enjoy from start to finish in one sitting.

There's strong evidence behind their calming appeal. With adults now spending an average of 13 hours a day on screens, puzzles offer a tangible break from technology. Focusing on colours and shapes can encourage a meditative, so-called alpha state, helping to lower heart rate and blood pressure. Many people also experience a sense of flow while puzzling, becoming fully absorbed in the task and allowing everyday stresses and anxieties to fade into the background.

For us, mini jigsaws felt like the perfect home for Poundbury Good Things illustrations: small objects, thoughtfully made, offering a tiny haven of calm in the day.
