The Beryl bike bay at Queen Mother Square has been a welcome addition to the Poundbury community since its launch six weeks ago. Promoting sustainable transportation, the bay has quickly become a popular feature in the area, helping residents and visitors adopt a greener, healthier way of getting around.

Strong Numbers
Since its debut on March 31st, 2025, the Queen Mother Square bay has recorded an impressive 264 rides by 127 individual users, covering about 3.3 km each. With about 44 rides per week, this bay’s performance is one of the top busiest locations across the region.
Though these early figures are encouraging, Dorset Council’s Transport Projects Officer Darren Orchard notes that bike usage typically peaks in the initial weeks of service before stabilising. To maintain interest, Darren has secured more bikes available in the Dorchester area, ensuring that riders can more easily find a bike when they need one. “Keeping the bikes visible and well-publicised will help sustain strong engagement,” he adds.
