On Tuesday 18th November around 50 children from the Prince of Wales and Damers schools plus 50 parents, teachers and marshals enjoyed an exciting ‘glow ride’ through Dorchester.
The ride had been organised by Dorchester Transport Action Group, in partnership with the schools, to help give children confidence cycling in slightly unusual conditions – and also to have a bit of fun.
It all started at 5pm at Damers school where the children (and their parents) cycled to the Prince of Wales school. They then all cycled back to the Great Field on Poundbury for a warming hot chocolate drink and some dancing at the PIP’s café.
Gary Spracklen, Head of Prince of Wales School, said “The Glow Ride was a brilliant example of our community coming together to celebrate safe, active travel. Our pupils loved the chance to take part and it highlights how important it is that Dorchester continues to develop safe cycling routes so that families feel confident getting around the town by bike.”
All the children were given free reflective strips and glow lights so the ride was lit up with excitement and fun. Parents and volunteers from Dorchester Transport Action Group acted as marshals to ensure that the children cycled safely.

The Baker family all came along (Emma, Hollie and Seth) and said afterwards, “"Thank you to Dorchester Transport Action Group for organising such a fantastic event. We loved getting out on our bikes with lots of friends and it was great to see so many bikes glowing! The atmosphere was amazing - families and friends all riding together through Dorchester lit up like a festival on wheels! It was such a fun way to enjoy the town and celebrate cycling. We hope that more safe cycle routes around Dorchester will be delivered to encourage more active travel."
Giles Watts, Secretary of Dorchester Transport Action Group, commented “The enthusiasm shown by both children and parents was absolutely brilliant. This shows the advantages of active travel and the need for more safe cycle routes across Dorchester especially for our youngsters”.
Dilys Gartside, who thankfully stepped in at the last minute to lead the ride summed it all up, “The event was a real community effort and thanks must go to Darren Scott, MD of Deane Computer Solutions for sponsorship and to Duncan McBain and Stickleback Jack for the musical entertainment. PiP’s café opened up especially to welcome the riders and provide a cup of hot chocolate – much needed”! Thanks Dilys!
