Q&A Series: Allotments in Poundbury—What's Available and What's Planned?

This article is part of our Q&A series and follows the Stakeholder Panel at the Community Association of Poundbury AGM on 21 May 2025. We are grateful to all the panel members and to our members who submitted questions in advance.

The questions asked were: As Poundbury continues to grow, are there plans for additional allotment provision beyond the existing two sites? Is the plan still for the allotment area near the fire station to be leased, with water rents collected from users?

Interest in allotments and growing spaces has grown significantly in recent years, and Poundbury is no exception. At the AGM, the Duchy of Cornwall provided an update on current provision and what's in the pipeline—and the news is positive.

Current provision

There are currently two allotment areas operating within Poundbury. Both are active and in use by residents who have taken on plots for growing fruit, vegetables and other plants.

  • The allotments near the Community Farm on Middle Farm Way are managed by the Poundbury Gardening Society. To enquire about vacancies, please contact the secretary here

  • The allotment area near the Fire Station is in the final stages of formalising its Duchy lease. Once signed, this will put the management of that site on a more formal footing, including arrangements for water rents to be collected from users in the usual way. To enquire about vacancies, contact them here.

A third allotment area: North-East Sector

Looking ahead, a further allotment area is planned for the north-east sector of Poundbury, on the north side of Peninsular Way. This site is already marked on the Poundbury community map, a useful indication that this is a committed part of the development plan.

The Poundbury community map is available on the Love Poundbury website at lovepoundbury.org/poundbury-map. The allotment location in the north east sector can be found there, along with other planned and existing community spaces.
