Tech Tuesday: Five Minutes to a Safer Phone
A short, no-jargon checklist you can do right now, while the kettle boils.

1. TURN ON TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION
Go into your email and banking apps' security settings and switch on "two-factor" or "two-step" verification. It means even if someone gets your password, they still can't get in without a code sent to your phone.
2. CHECK WHAT YOUR APPS CAN SEE
On iPhone: Settings > Privacy & Security. On Android: Settings > Apps > Permissions. Have a quick look at which apps can access your location, camera, or contacts. Torch apps rarely need your location. If something looks odd, turn it off — nothing breaks.
3. SHORTEN YOUR LOCK SCREEN TIMEOUT
The longer your phone stays unlocked after you last touched it, the longer window someone has if it's ever lost or picked up. Thirty seconds to a minute is a sensible middle ground.

4. TURN ON "FIND MY PHONE"
Both iPhone (Find My) and Android (Find My Device) let you locate, lock, or wipe your phone remotely if it's lost. It takes two minutes to switch on and is genuinely useless to skip.
5. CHECK YOU'RE UP TO DATE
Settings > General > Software Update (iPhone) or Settings > System > System Update (Android). If it says an update is waiting, let it run tonight.
That's it — five small changes, and your phone is meaningfully harder to exploit if it's ever lost, stolen, or targeted.
