The Invention That Changed the World—and the Man Who Made It Lives Here

There’s a good chance you are reading this on a device that would not exist without your Poundbury neighbour Peter Noble. The camera in your smartphone, the digital camera on your shelf, the imaging systems inside the scanner at your hospital— all of them depend on a technology that Peter invented in 1966, in a research laboratory in Northampton, at the age of twenty-five.
The active pixel sensor is the fundamental component of modern digital imaging. It converts light into electrical signals with a precision and efficiency that made digital photography not just possible but universal. Today it is estimated to be inside eight billion devices. It underpins the cameras on Mars rovers, the systems that allow autonomous vehicles to see the road ahead, the facial recognition technology in your phone, and the computer vision systems that are driving the artificial intelligence revolution. It is one of the most consequential inventions of the post-war era, and its inventor has lived in Poundbury for more than thirty-five years.
Peter Noble came to Poundbury before it was the Poundbury we know today. He was involved in the original consultancy process before the first houses were built, served as a founding trustee of the Poundbury Community Trust, and chaired MANCO 2 for seventeen years. He is truly a Poundbury original.

His scientific career began at school-leaving age (he left at fifteen) and took him through industrial research into a founding role at Integrated Photomatrix Ltd on Grove Trading Estate in Dorchester, the company through which he commercialised the active pixel sensor. IPL received the Queen's Award for Industry in 1974. The technology it produced has since become the invisible infrastructure of modern life.
Recognition has come, if not always promptly. The International Image Sensor Society gave him its Pioneering Achievement Award in 2015. In 2022, the Television Academy awarded him the Emmy® for Technology and Engineering. “I thought it was a prank,” he has said of that moment. It was not. The Emmy is awarded for contributions that have permanently and fundamentally shaped the industry.
The National Science and Media Museum in Bradford now holds the Peter J W Noble Active Pixel Archive, a permanent record of the invention and the man behind it.

But the sensor is only one side of Peter. There is a broader pattern: for sixty years he has had a habit of building things that other people benefit from, mostly without ever learning whose idea it was.
He has belonged to Round Table, and then Rotary, for the best part of four decades, serving as club president in the early 1990s, helping raise more than £102,000 for relief efforts after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and taking on leadership of the wider Dorset district as District Governor in 2012. The following year, rather than settle for the clubs that already existed, he started one of his own: the Rotary Club of Dorchester Poundbury, founded in 2013, remains one of the community's most active organisations. It is that record of service, as much as the invention, that earned him his MBE in 2018.

His third project is more unusual. In the early 1980s, not long after helping run a BMX freestyle show at a local carnival, Peter became founding chairman of the United Kingdom Bicycle Freestyle Association, one of the first bodies to give the sport any organised structure in Britain, at a time when BMX freestyle barely existed here as a recognised pursuit. His sons grew up riding; Mark went on to become a flatland world champion and was inducted into the British BMX Hall of Fame, building a career at the heart of the sport as a rider, and later a magazine editor. It is an unusual kind of family legacy to sit alongside a Queen's Award and an Emmy, but Peter appears to treat all three the same way: as things that needed doing, which he happened to be placed to do.
