The Story Behind Bark in the Park

For several years, Art at the Duchess has held a summer fundraising event in support of local charities. This year marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter with the introduction of The Lexi May Trust as our chosen charity partner.

As we looked for a fresh idea that would appeal to the whole community, The Lexi May Trust's founders and trustees, Carly Hopkin and Sam Hillier, joined me for a brainstorming session. Knowing Carly and Sam's passion for animals and the special role pets play in so many families' lives, the idea of Bark in the Park was born.

What started as a simple idea soon developed into a major community event. Months of planning followed, with countless hours spent securing permissions to use the Great Field, arranging insurance and logistics, inviting sponsors, recruiting traders and exhibitors, organising dog classes and demonstrations,  arranging entertainment, promoting the event and, of course, encouraging as many people as possible to come along and support this wonderful cause.

As Bark in the Park developed, it became apparent that, as a fundraising initiative of Art at the Duchess, it would be fitting to include an artistic element within the day's programme. From that idea, Paint in the Park was born as a complementary attraction, bringing together artists and dog lovers in a unique way.

Artists of all ages and abilities are invited to spend the day sketching or painting whatever inspires them — perhaps a favourite pet, the bustling atmosphere of the event, or the beautiful surroundings of Poundbury's Great Field. By introducing this creative element, we hope to celebrate not only our love of dogs but also the artistic talent within our community, while maintaining the strong connection with Art at the Duchess.

Prizes will be awarded for Best Pet Portrait, Best Scene of the Day, and Junior Artist, and judged on the day by a very talented animal portrait artist — Olivia Willoughby.

The response from the local community has been heartening. So many businesses, organisations and individuals have generously offered their support, whether through sponsorship, raffle prizes, volunteering or simply giving their time and expertise. I have been particularly grateful for the many contacts and friendships built up over the years, which have helped turn an ambitious idea into what promises to be a memorable day for everyone.

Now, after months of preparation, all that remains is to hope the weather is kind and that the community turns out in force. If it does, Bark in the Park will not only provide a fun-filled day for families and their four-legged friends but will also raise another generous sum for The Lexi May Trust, continuing the proud tradition of fundraising established through Art at the Duchess.

David is always supported by his much "put upon" partner Richard. Although their dogs Darcey and Milo will not be entering the classes they will be very much in evidence on the day !!!
