The Story Behind Spirit: Poundbury's New Hare Motif

Updated: Jul 18

Last week, we introduced Poundbury Good Things a new initiative celebrating the creativity, pride, and spirit of our community through beautifully designed merchandise, crafted here in Poundbury or based on original, hand-drawn artwork. With profits this year supporting youth and other programmes at PIP on the Great Field, Poundbury Good Things is about more than just products—it's about connection, creativity, and giving back to the place we call home.

At the heart of this initiative lies a very special symbol: Spirit, a stylised hare that embodies the essence of Poundbury. Inspired by a Roman-era brooch discovered near the Roman Town House in Dorchester, Spirit represents vitality, renewal, and our deep connection to the land. The hare motif will feature across Poundbury Good Things merchandise, from greeting cards and prints to tote bags and tea towels, serving as a visual reminder of what makes Poundbury unique.

The design of Spirit was lovingly crafted by local volunteer and artist Mary O'Flaherty, whose talent and dedication have brought this symbol to life. Mary's work draws on Poundbury's rich history and natural beauty, blending ancient inspiration and a fascination with our Celtic past with a modern, artistic touch. Her thoughtful design process ensures that Spirit is not just a decorative element but a meaningful representation of our community's story.

About the Artist: Mary O'Flaherty is a Poundbury resident and volunteer artist with a passion for capturing the beauty and history of her surroundings. Her work is inspired by the Dorset landscape, local heritage, and the vibrant community she calls home. Mary's design for Spirit reflects her love for Poundbury and her commitment to creating something that resonates with everyone who lives and works here.Through Spirit and the Poundbury Good Things initiative, we aim to celebrate our community's creativity and raise funds for meaningful causes such as Summer Music in the Park.

Whether you're buying a gift for a loved one or something special for your home, every purchase will help support local programmes and other initiatives that strengthen our community.Stay tuned for more updates on Poundbury Good Things, including sneak peeks of a full colour design and merchandise. Together, let's celebrate the spirit of Poundbury—one beautiful item at a time.

We gratefully acknowledge Megan Isobel Howarth's help in digitising 'Spirit' to look as smart and lovely as you see here.
