This May, Dorchester will come together to honour the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, remembering the end of World War II in Europe and celebrating the peace that followed. In true community spirit, a series of events are planned to mark this historic occasion—from stirring proclamations and beacon lightings to live music and shared memories. Whether you're a lifelong resident or just visiting, everyone is warmly invited to take part in these meaningful and memorable commemorations.
Thursday 8th May
VE Day Proclamation - 8th May at 9.00am
Dorchester's Town Crier, Mr Anthony Harrison, will cry out the VE Day Proclamation at 9.00am at the Town Pump at Cornhill at the exact same time as Town Criers across England celebrate the 80th anniversary. The Town Crier will be joined by the Mayor of Dorchester, Cllr Robin Potter, as the VE Day 80th commemorative flag is raised over the Town Hall.
Veterans Lunch. At midday on 8th May The Dorchester branch of the Royal Navy Association is holding a commemorative lunch at The Junction pub which is open to any WW2 veterans or civilians who took an active role in helping the war effort. If you’d like to attend, then please contact Roy Dean by Friday 2 May on 07788 892908 – they will need to know the names of anyone planning to attend and whether they will be accompanied by a partner or carer.
Beacon Lighting Event - Thursday 8th May 8.15pm
Dorchester Town Council is inviting the community to come together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day at Salisbury Field. The event will include music from the Decadettes and performances of memories of the day followed by the National Proclamation by our Town Crier and the Last Post. The beacon will then be lit at 9.30pm. Everyone is welcome!
Saturday 10th May
Free concert from the Casterbridge Male Voice Choir
Free concert from the Casterbridge Male Voice Choir at 12.15pm in the Corn Exchange. The Choir will celebrating the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a performance of a range of 1940s music. The Choir has a history dating back to 1941.
Sunday 11th May
VE Day 80th Celebration Concert - Sunday 11th May 1.00pm-4.00pm
To round off the celebration of VE Day 80, the Town Council is hosting a free concert in Borough Garden on Sunday 11th May with a programme of 1940s and patriotic music from the Decadettes and the Durnovaria Silver Band. Bring a picnic or use our wonderful Gardens' catering kiosk.
