A Note for Dog Owners: Keeping Poundbury Clean and Considerate

We recently published the Poundbury Seven — a framework for living well right here, inspired by the world-famous Alameda health research. One of its principles feels particularly relevant this week.

Principle Six is Steward the Place You Live: Plant something. Pick up litter. Maintain beautiful spaces. Care for nature. Civic pride is a practice. This principle feels apt when it comes to keeping Poundbury clean and welcoming for everyone, including our four-legged residents.

Two squares now designated dogs on leads

Please note that Coade Square has now joined Hayward Square as a dogs-on-leads area. Both are shared community spaces that residents, families, and visitors use and enjoy — thank you for keeping your dog on the lead when passing through.

Dog fouling

We're pleased that the Community Association of Poundbury's doggy bag dispenser initiative is making a genuine difference to the dog fouling situation at key hotspots across Poundbury — and we're very grateful for the support from our volunteers and community.

But there are still occasions when deposits get left behind. When that happens, it's really appreciated when dog lovers and walkers who spot the problem simply deal with it, even when it isn't theirs to clear up. Stewarding the place where we live sometimes means going just a little beyond what's strictly ours to do, and it makes a real difference to everyone who shares these spaces.

We'd also gently remind dog owners to be mindful of where their dogs foul. Please do pull them away from people's front gardens, planted medians, and front steps — these are spaces that residents take pride in and maintain with care. Wild-planted verges and open fields are a much more suitable alternative, and a small moment's attention helps keep Poundbury lovely for everyone.

Dog waste bins are located on the Great Field. Dog waste can also go in the general litter bins at the Buttermarket, Woodlands Crescent green, and Pavilion Green.

Poundbury is a community that cares for its spaces — and its animals. Thank you for doing your bit.
