Dorchester Town Councillors recently visited Holmead Walk Green and Jubilee Wood on the southern edge of Poundbury. The tour provided an opportunity to assess the condition of the area and discuss its long-term management.
Councillor William Gibbons emphasised the area's value, stating,
"The site is an important recreational space for residents in the Dorchester area. It's well-used by walkers, offers great views of Maiden Castle, and features a splendid avenue of young beech trees as well as Jubilee Wood, planted to mark the Queen's Jubilee in 2002. There are also several benches for residents to sit and admire the view.
The site is due to transfer from the Duchy into the care of Dorchester Town Council under a 99-year lease, pending an independent arboricultural survey commissioned by the Duchy. The councillors noted that Jubilee Wood has become crowded and overgrown.
These councillor tours are important for fostering connections with residents and understanding the needs of the community. Such regular visits help the Council plan improvements, prioritise resources, and ensure spaces like Holmead Walk Green and Jubilee Wood remain accessible and enjoyable for all. Dorchester Town Council's future stewardship will ensure the long term future as a recreational area."
