Q&A Series: Business Safety and Community Vigilance in Dorchester

The question asked was: Residents have raised concerns about certain commercial premises that may be operating as fronts for illegal activities. Can we seek assurance that the appropriate bodies are actively monitoring businesses in the Dorchester area and will take prompt action where concerns are identified?

Although it's not a question anyone wants to have to ask, it is the kind of question a healthy community should be willing to raise. At our AGM, residents asked whether the right bodies are keeping a watchful eye on commercial premises in our area. The answer, from both the Mayor Les Fry and Councillor Richard Biggs, was reassuring.

Dorchester's crime context

Mayor Fry was clear: while drug-related and associated crimes exist in Dorchester, as they do in most towns across the UK, Dorchester and Poundbury especially have one of the lowest crime rates in the country, which is a reflection of the efforts of both local authorities and an engaged community.

As at our AGM, the message on suspicious activity was consistent: report it to the police online at dorset.police.uk rather than by phone. Online reports create a formal record that helps build the intelligence picture for officers.

Trading standards and business monitoring

Councillor Richard Biggs confirmed that Trading Standards officers do proactively visit premises that display recognised indicators of possible impropriety. This is part of a wider enforcement framework that operates regionally and nationally.

If you have specific concerns about a business — whether related to trading practices, licensing, or other issues — Trading Standards can be contacted through the Citizens Advice portal. Reports are treated in confidence.

A note on money laundering

It was noted after the meeting that while the discussion touched on the potential sale of illegal goods, the question of money laundering through certain types of retail outlet was not explicitly addressed. This is a recognised issue nationally and one that falls within the remit of both Trading Standards and law enforcement agencies. If you have specific concerns of this nature, these can be reported confidentially to the National Crime Agency's financial intelligence unit.
