When Andy Moxham moved his rug business from Twickenham to Poundbury in late August, he brought with him over three decades of expertise in one of the world's most ancient and fascinating trades. Now settled on Bridport Road, just by the Buttermarket, Rugs of Dorset is offering the local community something special—and a warm welcome to anyone who'd like to pop in and browse.
'We moved to Poundbury because it's part of the lovely market town of Dorchester, and Poundbury is a very unique place,' Andy says. 'Not only does it have beautiful homes and architecture, but the friendly feel made us want to be part of this community.'

A Unique Approach to an Ancient Craft
What sets Rugs of Dorset apart is Andy's personal approach. Every piece is individually selected for quality and ethical production. Working with artisans from weaving communities across Persia, Afghanistan, India, Turkey, and beyond, these are not factory-made imitations but genuine, hand-knotted or flat-woven pieces created using techniques passed down through generations.
'After 30 years, it's still an incredible industry to be in,' he says. 'Every piece is a unique work of art, and the people we meet are fascinating—from the different nationalities we deal with when travelling to India and Persia, to our customers who fall in love with a rug.'
Whether you're drawn to the geometric patterns of a bold Afghan Kilim, the luxurious texture of a Persian Tabriz, or the rustic charm of a tribal Qashqai rug, the curated collection celebrates diversity in design and tradition.

Browse, Borrow, and Discover
The shop's relaxed atmosphere reflects Andy's philosophy. 'When people come through the door, I hope they see a range of rugs they haven't seen before and are amazed by the range of colours and designs,' he says. 'We're a very laid back shop and are happy for people to come and have a nose.'
Rugs of Dorset also offers a "borrow before you buy" service, allowing customers to take rugs home to see how they work in their space—a practical touch that recognizes these are significant purchases that need to feel right.
Looking Ahead
Once fully settled, Andy plans to host special events including nomadic rug evenings with talks, Afghan bale openings, and other focused gatherings for rug enthusiasts. It's another way he hopes to build connections within the community.
